Tomatoes stay fresh for months if you mix them with two kitchen items

Whether we’re making a salad or treating ourselves to a BLT, tomatoes are that healthy but delicious addition that we seem to come back too time and time again.

As with a number of fruit and veg we are all too familiar with the somewhat frustrating, and increasingly costly sight of them going past their best, and in some instances starting to spoil.

But, that is where EatWithEvidence comes in, the YouTuber has recently revealed the simple step by step method to ensuring that we can reach into our fridges assured in the knowledge that our tomatoes are as fresh as ever.

In one of her latest videos she detailed how to combine the fruit with two everyday household items to make sure that tomatoes can stay at their best for months.

Firstly, before finding the ingredients, she said that we will first need a large bowl, measuring cups and a kitchen towel. Once that’s done, we should measure out a one quarter cup of distilled white vinegar, and combine it with 10 cups of water.

Once completing this step she advised next we should give the solution a stir with our hands before then proceeding to add the tomatoes into the liquid. Making sure the tomatoes are fully submerged she said that they should be “tossed around a little” in the liquid before allowing them to soak for “exaclty two minutes”.

Sharing an insight behind her process, she said: “As they soak, the vinegar solution gets to work, it helps to neutralise the existing mould spores and washes away surface bacteria that may be hanging out on the skin. The surface of your tomatoes is normally a neutral playground where microorganisms can grow. When you put the tomatoes into the acidic vinegar bath, you completely change that environment.”

After the appropriate time has elapsed, Tracy said it is finally the moment to move onto the third and final step. Highlighting how it is just as crucial as the other stages, she said that it is important that we dry each tomato thoroughly when removing them from the bowl.

She said we should pay close attention to the stem especially, as it is more suscpeptible to letting in mould further down the line if it is not dried sufficiently.

However, should you fear that your tomoatoes have ever gone off, there are usually some tell tale signs that include signs of mould, become mushy and/or wrinkled as well as starting to have a peculiar smell that might also indicate that they have gone past their best.
