‘I made porridge with 2 extra ingredients and it’s the best I’ve ever tasted’

I tried a new combination of ingredients with my porridge and I think I have just found my new favourite way of eating it. Porridge is a staple breakfast for many people in the UK and it is something I eat most mornings.

It is easily prepared in the microwave or on the stove and popular ingredients include sugar, bananas and syrup or honey. However, I have just tried a new porridge recipe, one that is so simple that I can’t believe I didn’t try it before. As a somewhat porridge connoisseur (if such a thing exists), I like to try different ways to eat porridge. Lately, a go-to of mine has been honey and chopped bananas, but I have also enjoyed making it with frozen berries, maple syrup, or just sugar. However, my latest porridge adventure has led me to discover the tastiest bowl of oats I have ever eaten.

When making my porridge this week, I was sort of stuck for ingredients so I had to use what I had. After pouring milk over my oats in the pot, I added two ingredients that changed the game.

Firstly, I added peanut butter. I used a heaped tablespoon of smooth peanut butter, a tub I got in Tesco for just £1.10.

Instantly, I noticed the texture of the porridge become smooth and creamy. Already, I knew that this was a good idea. But with the addition of peanut butter, I needed something sweet to balance it out.

While I didn’t have any fruit, fresh or frozen, I raided the cupboard to see if there was any syrup or sugar I could add in. Alas, there was not.

However, the jar of strawberry jam I had in the fridge, which is normally reserved for toast, proved to be an excellent addition when added to the porridge.

I added a tablespoon of strawberry jam after I had stirred in the peanut butter. Much like the first ingredient, the jam took quite a while to break down and dissolve into the porridge.

In fact, it didn’t fully dissolve and there were still small lumps of it in the porridge when it was time to eat it. However, this was a nice surprise whenever one landed in my spoonful.

The taste was next level and it is definitely the nicest bowl of porridge I have ever enjoyed, so much so that I don’t think honey will be a feature in my weekly shopping anymore.

The consistency was the smoothest I ever managed to get it, thanks to the peanut butter. Meanwhile, the strawberry jam was a delicious and cost-effective way to add some sweetness to my breakfast.
