Chips will be perfectly crispy using ‘game changing’ extra step
A home cook has revealed their secret to making perfectly crispy air fryer chips by adding one ‘game-changing’ step to the recipe. Chips are a classic British comfort food that pairs well with many meals, but while it’s easy to buy frozen chips from the supermarket, making your own in an air fryer is just as simple.
TikTok user @NutritionFromKay shared her recipe, saying: “HEALTHY fries under 150 calories! Here’s a simple recipe for all the fry lovers but a much healthier version with less calories using the air fryer.” She demonstrated the recipe by cutting an unpeeled potato into batons.
For the best homemade French fries, it’s recommended to use high-starch, low-moisture potatoes like Russet, Maris Piper or King Edward.
After chopping, soak the raw fries in iced water for 15 minutes to achieve crispiness.
Then, drain the fries, add one teaspoon of oil and your choice of seasonings (the video creator used salt and paprika), and cook them in the air fryer at 200°C/400°F for 15-20 minutes.
You can tuck into perfectly crisped chips for fewer than 150 calories per serving, the video’s creator says.
The recipe has become a massive hit, with viewers flocking to the comments section to share their own successful attempts.
One person commented: “Just made these and omg they are perfect! I’m going to save so much money (and calories) on takeout orders because I can now make fries at home. Thank you.”
Another said: “The ice bath makes a difference,” to which @NutritionFromKay replied: “Yes definitely a game changer when I started doing the ice bath step lol.”
A third shared: “I keep seeing people put them in ice to make them crispier… I was skeptical and never did it out of doing them in a hurry. Yesterday put them in ice while I went for a run… never going back.”
Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I love these fries!”
