Carrots will stay fresh ‘for 6 months’ if stored 1 ‘ridiculously simple’ way
Storing carrots can be frustrating if you keep finding they are going off fast. Using fresh vegetables is a crucial part of a balanced and healthy diet so you’ll want to make sure they last as long as possible.
For this simple method, you’ll need three things which are garden scissors, a metal skewer and some resealable zip-lock storage bags. Experts at Garden Betty say there’s a simple solution to storing carrots that doesn’t involve any complex tasks or time consuming jobs. It says the tried and tested method “will keep your carrots crisp and flavorful for up to six months”.
Garden Betty adds: “It’s incredible because if done correctly, they won’t mold and they won’t get soft and limp.”
If you grow your own carrots at home or in an allotment, you should wait until there have been a few frosts in your area before harvesting them.
It adds that when exposed to frost, carrots naturally accumulate extra sugars to protect their cells from freezing.
Garden Betty says: “This results in wonderfully sweet carrots that are a far cry from the earthy, bitter carrots you often get from the store.”
The next thing you need to do is to cut the greens off and either use them as mulch or compost them.
It adds: “Leaving the greens on your carrots will allow them to continue drawing moisture from the roots, making them soft, so you definitely want to remove them.”
You should then rinse the carrots and leave to try for 15 minutes, making sure there is no moisture. This is when you’ll need the metal skewer to poke about 20 holes through each bag.
After poking the holes, pack your carrots into storage bags which helps to keep ventilation high and reduce mould.
It says you should store the bags in the fridge and your carrots will last up to six months this way without losing flavor or crispness.
By following this simple method, you can easily keep your vegetables fresher for longer.
